Queen Victoria - The Endless Night [2007]

Beyond being utterly obscure, this record has a few other things going for it, too. First off, as the cover might lead you to believe, it’s great for a late, lonely night. At times, it comes pretty close to capturing that 3 AM feeling that can’t really be put into words (but what the hell); when you feel completely aimless and desperate, yet strangely at peace. The record’s best tracks are those that focus on such feelings, with “Up On the Rooftop” being the obvious highlight. A beautifully simple lo-fi pop song, “Up On the Rooftop” features a laconic melody and gently descending piano line that are both melancholic and hopeful. A solid record; one that, admirably, aspires to be more than a collection of songs–a piece that flows as a whole, with both musical and thematic cohesion. -- Elias Isquith
